Healthcare librarians are increasingly expected to include critical appraisal in their portfiolio of expertise. If you already have a basic understanding of what critical appraisal involves and would like to build on what you know, or are simply curious to know what else you should learn to increase your competency, then this workshop is for you.

By the end of the course participants will have:
  • investigated how to critically appraise a variety of research papers
  • acquired a solid grasp of the statistics relevant to critical appraisal
  • learned how to make immediate sense of research results
  • gained familiarity with the terminology and methodologies commonly used
  • critically appraised a wider range of research papers than are usually considered in basic critical appraisal courses
  • explored different ways of writing a critical appraisal report
  • reflected on the role and responsibilities of a critical appraisal facilitator

Who should attend
The course will benefit information and healthcare professionals working in NHS hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, medical schools and other healthcare organisations. Suitable for those who have attended or facilitated a critical appraisal session, or already have a basic understanding of what is involved in critical appraisal and are hungry for more. Also useful as a refresher course for those who need to consolidate what they know.

Special notes: this is not a course on evidence based medicine, research methodology or medical statistics.
