Portals – online gateways to library and information resources, are a useful tool for presenting a coherent, online presence to users. This course explores the concept of the portal and the potential benefits of using a portal for both library staff and users as well as the all-important non-technical aspects of design and guides to the latest portal technologies for non-technical staff.

Benefits of attending
Participants will gain an oversight into the current portal technologies and standards and identify their own needs as well as exploring the ideas and concepts behind good portal design and effective implementation.

By the end of the course participants will have:
  • an overview of the current portal technologies and standards
  • identified what they want from a portal and communicate these in a requirements document format
  • designed workflows and scenarios for different staff and user experiences
  • designed an effective implementation plan, tailored to their own staff and user needs

Who should attend?
Anyone who wants to learn about portals, particularly non-technical staff who are thinking of implementing a new portal or upgrading an existing portal. Please note that no technical expertise is required.

Special notes: participants are welcome to bring along case studies of their own portal issues.
