A practical one-day workshop for all library and information staff who have some experience of supervising others and wish to develop their skills.

Benefits from attending
Participants will reflect on the effectiveness of their communication and use practical feedback models to improve their supervision of others.

By the end of the course participants will be able to:
  • use assertive communication techniques to deal with difficult situations
  • give praise and criticism in an assertive, clear, behaviour based way
  • plan and deliver feedback and to recognise the impact of receiving feedback
  • adopt a coaching approach to develop staff skills and solve problems with staff

Who should attend?
Those who are already familiar with basic supervision skills and/or those who have previously attended CILIP’s Supervisory Skills workshop. Without knowing the true content of the programme it may be useful for participants to attend the assertiveness programme as well

Special notes: prior to attendance, participants should identify a personal case study where they have found it difficult or impossible to improve an individual’s performance. They will be asked to work on this case during the day.
