All school librarians teach; either one-to-one in the library or to small groups or whole classes working on assignments. This course focuses on the knowledge, skills and strategies needed to make that teaching as effective as possible. It will address not what you teach (the content), but how to structure and teach a session.

Benefits of attending
The course will enable participants to:
  • plan a session based on principles and theories of learning; in particular to set learning outcomes, choose appropriate techniques/activities to achieve them, and structure a session to encourage learning
  • identify key aspects of effective group work
  • consider ways of managing groups and classes of students including strategies for managing difficult behaviour
  • enhance their understanding of assessing students and evaluation
  • develop practical skills for teaching groups (via feedback on the micro-teaching activity)

Who should attend?
Secondary school librarians who would like the opportunity to explore aspects of planning and teaching sessions in a safe learning environment; who are interested in seeing how colleagues teach; who want to try to do things a bit differently.

Special notes: pre-course reading materials on principles and theories of learning will be provided.
