Qualified library & information professionals in Further Education - Case for Support

Great Further Education Colleges invest in qualified library and information professionals as a key component in delivering excellent learning and teaching. As pressure on budgets increases, it is essential that College Boards and Principals understand both the value of the college library as a central part of the learning experience and the risks of not employing qualified information professionals on their team.

This formal opinion has been produced by CILIP to support our members in FE Colleges in making the case for their roles. It addresses:

  • The positive impact qualified library and information professionals create for their employers
  • The efficiency gains which information professionals can deliver
  • The legal requirement on FE colleges to employ appropriate-qualified people
  • The wider requirement on college Boards to ensure that information risks are adequately managed

We encourage library and information professionals to download and use this document in support of their own advocacy, to share it with their employers and to contribute to the evidence-base in support of retaining professional skills and values in Further Education provision.
