Meet your new committee member – Ebony Burke

Posted By Jessica Blackburn-Smith, 28 July 2021

What role will you be playing in the committee?

I'm the new Events Officer for LIRG. Helping the committee to develop and create interesting events that will interest the CILIP community.

What is your day job?

I am currently a Senior Library Assistant at King's College London. I work as part of the Learning, Design and Delivery team which creates and delivers 121 support and workshops to the KCL community. My area of work focuses on systematic reviews, critical appraisals of research, supporting our NHS partners to access resources and teaching skills to enable life long and independent learning.

What do you hope to bring to the committee?

This is my first time being actively involved with CILIP and the LIRG committee and I hope to create activities that will engage a diverse community. I have experience organising a variety of physical and online events. Watch this space!

When you aren’t working what do you enjoy doing?

I am a big hot yoga fan and like to relax in this way. I am also a couch potato and love to chill and watch Netflix. Very yin and yang personality.

What role will you be playing in the committee?

I’m the new Digital Officer and am part of the LIRG marketing team, working alongside the External Communications Officer and the Content Officer. My main roles will include updating the LIRG webpages and curating the LIRG newsletter to keep you informed about the group’s latest news, upcoming events, and awards.

What is your day job?

I am an Assistant E-Resources Librarian at Cardiff University, helping to manage the University’s large e-resource collection with my colleagues in the Collection Management Team. My role involves ensuring access to e-resources, gathering usage statistics to inform renewal decisions, and liaising with publishers. I started this role in October 2020 so am yet to meet my colleagues in person!

What do you hope to bring to the committee?

I am really excited to be part of the LIRG committee, and I hope that my digital and communication skills will prove useful in this role. I have a passion for open research and am looking forward to supporting ‘research into practice’ and being a reviewer for the group’s open access journal Library and Information Research (LIR).

When you aren’t working what do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy walking my dog in the beautiful Welsh countryside and I have a keen interest in archaeology. Following on from my master’s dissertation I recently published a paper in RSOS about the origins of the crew of a Tudor warship, the Mary Rose. It’s open access if you fancy a read! https://doi.org/10.1098/rsos.202106

All three LIRG research skills modules now Live!

Posted By Fariba Bannerman, 03 June 2021
LIRG are pleased to announce that all three “introduction to research skills” tutorials developed for our members are now on CILIP eLearning Hub.
Access via CILIP members using this link:
https://www.cilip.org.uk/page/LIRGLandingPage
(please note you will need your CILIP credentials to log into the site).

Module OneMaking research approachable - will share individual's experience of starting to get involved with research, from the novice to the experienced practitioner.

Module two: How to plan research -  includes real life project examples to show how other people have done research. The tutorial gives you the chance to see a couple of research proposal examples and a project plan. This tutorial offers the chance to read them and look at how you could adapt the draft template for your own research project.

Module three: Doing research -  the final section of the module looks at conducting research. It takes you through some of the processes that you may need to use as you undertake research and it begins to explore the different ways that work can be disseminated. For example, an introduction on discourse analysis – how to review your focus group data. It also helps you navigate the different ways of promoting and disseminating research from internal reports to social media and publishing journal articles. It also explains the best way of managing and responding to the peer review process, when publishing in a journal.

LIRG Committee Vacancies

Posted By Fariba Bannerman, 24 March 2021

The Library and Information Research Group Committee needs new members!

The Library and Information Research Group (LIRG) supports and raises the profile of library and information science research and its use by CILIP members and the wider community.  We encourage 'research into practice' by providing activities and publications for LIS practitioners and researchers.

The LIRG committee meets monthly via zoom.  Committee members are from a range of different backgrounds and library sectors and include both practitioners and library academics providing a lively, diverse and friendly group.  A number of our committee members have taken up other roles within CILIP, so we are recruiting new committee members to fill soon to be vacant positions.  We also want to recruit to a new position to expand our member offer.  Training and support in all roles will be provided by existing committee members and CILIP as appropriate. The time commitment for all roles is approximately 1 hour per week.  This can increase at certain times of the year depending on role. If you want to gain additional skills and develop your career further, why not apply to join our committee? Being part of a cross-sectoral CILIP committee is a great way to engage with your profession and to network with information professionals from all sectors.

The vacancies we currently have are:
Secretary
Digital Officer
Content Creator
Events Officer
Awards and Prizes Officer

General requirements for committee members include:

  1. Commitment to LIRG mission of conducting research and/or putting research into practice within LIS setting
  2. Team work and communication skills
  3. Current awareness of issues affecting the LIS sector and the role of research and evidence-based decision-making in practice.
  4. Experience of working in an LIS setting.
  5. Commitment to attending LIRG committee meetings (1 hour per month)
CILIP is committed to championing diversity, inclusion and representation. We particularly welcome applications from BAME, disabled and LGBTQ+  candidates, who have historically been under-represented on our committees.  CILIP is currently offering up to 150 complimentary memberships to library and information workers from BAME backgrounds who are duly selected to join a committee before the end of 2022.
The closing date for applying for these vacancies is 30th April 2021, as we would like to formally make the appointments to the committee at our AGM in May.
If you are interested in being a part of LIRG and would like to discuss any of the vacant positions please get in touch with Leo Appleton, incoming chair of LIRG at l.appleton@sheffield.ac.uk

The first LIRG tutorial goes live on the CILIP eLearning Hub!

Posted By Gillian E. Siddall, 23 February 2021
LIRG are pleased to announce that the “introduction to research skills” tutorials developed for our members are now moving onto the CILIP eLearning Hub. The first module “What is research?” is now live and can be accessed by CILIP members using this link: https://www.cilip.org.uk/page/LIRGLandingPage (please note you will need your CILIP details to log into the site).

The next two modules will go live on the CILIP eLearning Hub over the next few months. These are:
2. How to plan research.
3. Doing research.
The tutorials have been designed to be as interactive as possible. They use question prompts to encourage you to reflect and review your knowledge and experience with research. The tutorials also include handouts to help you explore the benefits of research to you and your organisation. To add value to these tutorials, the Library and Information Research Group committee members have shared their hints and tips that they have learnt about research in their careers. An opportunity to have some guidance as you explore and begin your research journey.

Each tutorial includes videos from experts on how to develop research skills. The tutorials are designed to support several areas of the PKSB, including (4) research skills; (12) IT and communication; and (9) leadership and advocacy. The first tutorial “what is research” aims to make research approachable. It answers the question ‘why should I do research?’. The module includes case studies and key arguments on how research can help LIRG members to develop as a professional. These might be useful to help provide justification for research to a manager or organisation. The tutorial includes link to relevant journal articles, demonstrating research in practice and further information on the topics discussed.

We hope you find the tutorials helpful. If you have any comments or feedback, please let us know.
