National Survey Results: Could Do Better!

Posted By Administration, 19 hours ago
The results of the Great School Libraries Campaign survey into school library provision were launched at an event on Wednesday 16th October. Key findings include: 9 in 10 schools in England that participated in the research have access to a designated library space, falling to 67% in Wales and 57% in Northern Ireland, however; Schools with a higher proportion of children on free school meals are more than twice as likely not to have access to a designated library space; Employment terms for librarians and library staff fall below national standards, with low pay and little investment in professional development and training. Commenting on the publication of the research, Nick Poole, Chief Executive of CILIP said, “We welcome this landmark report as the first comprehensive picture of the state of play in our school libraries. On the one hand, it is a testament to the Head Teachers, Teachers, Governors and Librarians that value and promote the importance of school libraries for learners and their school. On the other hand, the research paints a picture of inequality of access and opportunity and insecure employment that we cannot accept. The findings highlight the urgency of securing national School Library Strategies and investment in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, drawing on the example of Scotland.” Download the full report here

Bursary to attend CILIP Conference 2019

Posted By Administration, 16 March 2019
The CILIP Conference (3-4 July, Manchester) is one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated events in the library and information sector and we can offer one full delegate place with one night’s accommodation as a bursary place. The CILIP Conference brings together around 500 professionals from across the sector to share experiences, knowledge and expertise. The keynote speakers include Liz Jolly, Patrick Lambe and Kriti Sharma. The programme is being finalised but you can see an outline of the session content at cilipconference.org.uk. Keep up to date by following @CILIPConf . SLG will have a stand in the exhibition hall, so remember to come and say hello, find out about our event schedule and see you can get involved with our projects. To submit your application for the bursary place, the criteria is that the successful candidate agrees to write an article for School Libraries In View and to tweet/post to Instagram whilst they are attending referencing SLG (we will need your Twitter name so that this can be checked). Deadline for applications is the 12th April 2019, please email to Chair.slg@cilip.org.uk . Previous SLG attendees have always commented on how much they have enjoyed the experience and attendance is valuable evidence to use to support Chartership/Fellowship applications or revalidation's. We are particularly interested in hearing from people who have never been to the CILIP Conference before, and who wouldn’t ordinarily be able to go. Alternatively, early bird discounts are available until 17 May and you can book these directly on the cilipconference.org.uk website. Remember to log in to the CILIP website before booking so that it recognises your membership status and offers you the correct delegate rate.

Posted By Caroline M. Roche, 30 March 2018
The CILIP Conference is returning to Brighton this July with a fantastic line-up of keynote speakers, thought provoking seminars and essential workshops. Meet like-minded colleagues and make new connections for two days of knowledge sharing, discussion, debate and networking opportunities. The conference aims to leave you feeling inspired and passionate about the work that we do as professionals. It is also an excellent way to help with your Chartership application. We are delighted to be able to offer a bursary place. We would like you to submit an email to Chair.SLG@cilip.org.uk outlining how you think attending Conference will help you with your CPD and how you anticipate being able to apply this at school. You will also have evidence that you are active on social media and will be asked to use this throughout to promote the Conference and SLG too. You will also be asked to write up your experience for our professional publication School Libraries in View. Submissions to be with us by 16:00 on Monday 16th April 2018. To keep up to date on conference developments, follow @CILIPConf18 and #CILIPConf18 and visit the website cilipconference.org.uk. You can also register for the conference. Don’t worry - if you receive a bursary place, CILIP will refund you.
