Fri, 20th Feb 2015 - 10:00am to 5:00pm

The CILIP Cataloguing and Indexing Group (CIG) is pleased to announce a re-run of its popular one-day event on linked data and the future of cataloguing.

Would you like to understand more about linked data? Want to discover what is already possible with linked data for catalogue records? Have you heard that “MARC must die” but wonder what will replace it?

Linked data is a way of storing and sharing structured data that is becoming more and more significant in many areas, including government, geographic, and bibliographic data. The Library of Congress has set up the Bibliographic Framework Initiative (BIBFRAME) to develop a transition path from MARC formats to a more web-based, linked data model. The event will cover:

  • Introduction to Linked Data
  • Real Linked Data: Publishing and Using It
  • Publishing the British National Bibliography as Linked Open Data
  • Searching Linked Data with Sparql using the British National Bibliography data
  • What’s Wrong with MARC?
  • FRBR UnMARCed: RDA cataloguing using RIMMF (RDA in Many Metadata Formats)
  • BIBFRAME and moving away from MARC

Speakers will be Tom Meehan (UCL), Owen Stephens (Owen Stephens Consulting), Alan Danskin and Corine Deliot (both of the British Library).

This is an introductory session aimed at library cataloguers and others involved in metadata and resource discovery. No previous knowledge of linked data or BIBFRAME is assumed.
Date: Friday 20th February 2015
Time: 10:00-17:00
Venue: Imperial College London
Cost: £40 + VAT (CIG members), £45 + VAT (non-CIG members), including lunch and refreshments

Please note this is a repeat of the CIG Linked Data event held in November 2013. Some of the information has been updated to reflect changes since that date but it is essentially the same content and therefore not suitable for people who attended the 2013 event.
