The guided tour will be conducted by the Librarian, Dr Moira Goff. Please note that the visit is only to the Library, and not a tour of the Club and its art works.

The Club was founded in 1831 by a group of literary enthusiasts, under the patronage of the king’s brother the Duke of Sussex, with the aim of providing a meeting place for actors, patrons of the drama, & the facilities of a literary society, dining & social club. It was named after the famous 18th century actor David Garrick, (1717-1779), & included celebrated authors such as Dickens, Thackeray, Trollope, composers such as Elgar, Sullivan, & artists namely Millais, Leighton & Rossetti, & actors Macready, Kemble, Beerbohm-Tree, & Forbes-Robertson.

It now has around 1300 members, including some of the most distinguished actors & dramatists currently working in the UK. The Club includes an important theatrical library, illustrating the history of British theatre, with more than 10,000 books, manuscripts, playbills, theatre programmes & ephemera, with some special collections devoted to the 18th-19th centuries, which can be checked in its online catalogue. The Library also includes the Garrick Club Archive, & some small archives devote to particular writers, & scrapbooks related to the life & career of David Garrick. & other contemporary actors.
