Nicola is an international expert in both teenage well-being and the reading brain and this course blends the two.

The day will consist of 3 sessions:

Session 1: The science of stress - for teenagers and the rest of us - including the contribution of screentime. Nicola will bring you the well-researched science, going behind media headlines to find out what we do and don't know about stress in our modern world, offline and online. At the end of this session you'll properly understand the problems and challenges and improve your insight into how things are for many people of all ages, with a special focus on the young people in your care.

Session 2: Strategies to improve wellbeing and manage stress, including healthy screen use, for teenagers (and the rest of us). This session takes our understanding forward to explore practical strategies we can use for ourselves, our friends and, of course, the young people in our care.

Session 3: The role of Reading for Pleasure in wellbeing and success. This session takes reading for pleasure as one strategy for wellbeing and looks at the fascinating science and evidence for choosing (and funding) this as a powerful tool for success in schools. How can we support young people (and the rest of us!) to read more for pleasure and why should we? Do our reading choices matter? Fiction or non-fiction? Simple or complex? Digital or print? Nicola shares what she knows.

This course is suitable for anyone who works with young people aged 10-25, either in a library, classroom or pastoral setting. you will also learn things to improve your own well-being and validate your love of reading!
