Freedom of Information in practice

Find out about the techniques that can help public bodies to manage their Freedom of Information obligations most effectively.

The Freedom of Information Act has been in force for nearly 15 years. Many of those dealing with requests will have a good handle on its legal requirements.

However, there’s more to FOI compliance than knowing what the law requires. Answering FOI requests is a logistical exercise requiring internal networks, effective training programmes, technological means to log and track requests, knowledge management techniques. It is usually coordinated by one person: the FOI Officer.

In this webinar, Paul Gibbons, author of The Freedom of Information Officer’s Handbook (Facet Publishing, 2019), will outline the logistical challenge faced by FOI Officers and their colleagues, and explain what needs to be in place for public authorities to be able to meet their legal obligations. You will learn about how other organisations manage FOI compliance; best practice in handling FOI requests; how to develop an FOI training and development programme; and the importance of good communication with applicants.
