Comic Book Corner: Using Graphic Novels to Engage Young People

Saturday 18th May 2019, 10am - 3.30pm, Newcastle City Library

We look forward to bringing you an exciting day of talks and discussions about using graphic novels to engage with young people, from toddlers to twentysomethings!

Tickets are £10 per person plus VAT, which includes tea and coffee on arrival and a goodie bag to take home. Lunch is not included, so please bring a packed lunch with you, or alternatively there are lots of food outlets close to the library. CILIP members and non-members are very welcome to attend.

Organised by CILIP Youth Libraries Group North East.

10am Arrival, refreshments and introduction

10.30 - 11.15am Mel Gibson, Associate Professor at Northumbria University, "A big bag of books: comics for children and young people"

11.15am - 12noon Lydia Wysocki, "Interactive look at past comic swaps" plus "make your own comics" session

12noon - 12.30pm Tara McInerney, University of Teesside, "Comics in education / comic fandom"

12.30 - 1.30pm Break for lunch (not provided)

1.30 - 2pm Paper Jam Comics Collective, "Small press comic making scene in Newcastle"

2 - 2.15pm Andy Hodgkinson, Gateshead Libraries, "Comics in Gateshead Library"

2.15 - 2.45pm Becca Swainston, Travelling Man - "More than underpants on the outside"

2.45 - 3.15pm Discussion panels

3.15 - 3.30pm Closing remarks and goodie bags!
