ARLGS library visits: the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the National Piping Centre

Friday 23rd August 2019

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Library serves the needs of a demanding community of performing artists, lecturers and (mostly practice-based) researchers. The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland having grown to a Full Time Equivalent student community of about 1000, the library is now on the small side, but focuses on providing materials for musicians, actors, producers and technicians, film and TV, and ballet practitioners. You'll be shown the library collections, and you'll hear about the challenges of supporting an institution that hosts over 500 events a year. If time, we'll also have a walk round the building, depending on which spaces aren’t actually in use on the day.

The National Piping Centre Library is a small specialist library holding a large collection of printed books, manuscripts and sound relating to the Great Highland Bagpipe. On top of its printed collections of music, the library also holds works relating to the history and culture of the bagpipe, in Scotland and beyond. The main focus of the visit will be on some of the library’s older material. James Beaton, Librarian at the NPC, will speak about what they do in the Centre today and will explain what his varied role consists of. In addition to a library, the multifunctional Centre includes a museum, a piping school and a restaurant.

There will be time for delegates to network after the visits. You will have the opportunity to join members of the ARLGS committee in the Pipers’ Tryst Restaurant, where you will be welcome to purchase drinks and/or food.

The afternoon visits will start with the visit of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Library, at 14:15. ARLGS committee members will be on-site from 14:00. Please meet us at the Client Services desk on the Ground Floor of the RCS. Afterwards, we will take a short 5-minutes walk to the National Piping Centre, where the teams at the Centre will be welcoming you for a tour of the Library and networking time at the Pipers’ Tryst.

We look forward to meeting you all! However, places are limited so please do not forget to book your free place if you wish to take part in the tours.
