About the session: Join Helen Stewart to hear all about ‘Building Better Readers’, a SLIF funded project designed to champion the reading culture in Primary and Additional Support Needs (ASN) Schools in North Ayrshire and to create a programme of reading activities and events to meet their needs.

This session offers information professionals the opportunity to learn about the process of the project and the outcomes, including:

  • Observational analysis of both excellent practice and those requiring additional support;
  • Innovative ideas and a toolkit for promoting reading for pleasure;
  • An inspirational World Book Day for Additional Support Needs schools;
  • Contact details for advice and support to those undertaking a similar initiative;
  • Skills for the development and support of libraries in primary and ASN schools without professional staffing;
  • Identification of training needs for staff and volunteers in similar projects.

Helen Stewart is the Library Development Officer (Primary and ASN Schools) attached to the Building Better Readers Project. She comes to North Ayrshire from a 16-year career as a Librarian in Chicago public libraries, working in a variety of roles from project development to teaching, community engagement and collection management. She has presented at numerous national conferences and webinars.
