Cataloguing and Indexing Group aims to:

The Cataloguing and Indexing Group (CIG) is a forum for members interested in the creation, organisation, storage, retrieval, and dissemination of bibliographic data as well as subject indexing to enable resource discovery and collection management.

The group promotes best practice, actively contributes to the development of metadata standards and formats, both national and international, and provides opportunities for learning and professional development.

CIG members are active in all areas of library and information science and the publishing sector, in any capacity, technical or managerial, and at any level, from student to senior professional.

Cataloguing and Indexing Group achieves these by:

Our representatives sit on the BIC Library Metadata Committee, the UK Committee on RDA (UKCoR) and EURIG.

We organise training events, seminars, workshops and visits throughout the year and hold a biennial residential conference.

We offer financial support to enable our members to engage with the wider community of metadata and information professionals in the form of the CIG bursary and sponsored places at selected training events to include the annual CILIP conference.

Every year we confer the Alan Jeffreys Award to recognise those who have made significant contributions to the understanding and development of cataloguing, indexing and related fields of librarianship.

Catalogue and Index is our quarterly open access journal.

CIG advises CILIP on matters concerning bibliographic control.
