Awards/Bursaries

The Local Studies Group run two awards every year: the Dorothy McCulla Memorial Prize and the Alan Ball Award. The awards are a great way to recognise the achievements of colleagues or projects.

Alan Ball Awards

The Alan Ball Awards were established in 1985 to encourage local history publishing by public libraries and local authorities. We now award both a print and an e-publication prize. Find out more and nominate a publication here.

McCulla Memorial Prize

The Local Studies Group is proud to have an award in memory of Dorothy McCulla, described by a local historian as "a most humble, friendly and exceptional person" with "100% enthusiasm for every task". Her devotion to increasing access to Birmingham's history through custodianship of its records is still a relevant example and important legacy for us today. Find out more and nominate a colleague here.

Most years we provide a bursary to support a library professional or student who wants to attend the CILIP annual conference. Details on the bursary for 2021 will be published later in the year.
