Public & Mobile Libraries Group - Latest News
IGW - 3rd - 9th November 2019
International Games Week has recently ended, with 94 UK public libraries taking part and over 120 UK libraries participating in total. This truly international event, (since the event began, over 10,000 libraries in 63 countries have taken part,) brings communities together, encourages people of all ages, (including those 'tricky teens,') into public libraries and has clear benefits for the well-being agenda, including reducing social isolation. PMLG is hoping to work more closely with UK coordinator Darren Edwards to bring this event to an even wider audience in the future. For more information, click on the button below.

Public & Mobile Libraries Group Awards 2019
On Friday 4th October 2019, the PMLG Awards Dinner was held at The Den, iconic home of Millwall FC. Sean Daly, CEO of Millwall Community Trust gave a fascinating account of the work done by the Trust supporting literacy and numeracy in the local communities of Southwark and Lewisham, including visits to schools by over 20 full- and part-time coaches working for the Trust and exciting programmes mixing literacy and numeracy with football. They even have a programme involving footballers from Millwall's EFL Championship Team Squad undertaking storytimes, readings and even 1:1 support and mentoring for young people. Sean was keen to spread the word - he offered to put everybody who attended the event in touch with their local Premiership or EFL football club and if their club's Community Trust didn't currently undertake any Literacy and Numeracy initiatives, to share all his resources with them. This was a sincere and genuine offer and many present vowed to take him up on it!
This was followed by the presentation of the Awards:
Public Library Champion 2019
Jillian McFrederick, of Libraries NI receiving the award from James Mortimer of Award Sponsors Lorensbergs.
Mobile Library Champion 2019
Lost-for-words Nelson Busby of Stirling Libraries, receiving the award from Nick Poole, CILIP CEO. The Mobile Library Champion Award is sponsored by Torton Bodies, the UK's largest Mobile Library Builder.

May we take this opportunity to express our thanks to Sean Daly, Veronica Quinn and all the team at Millwall for looking after us so well and providing both an excellent dinner and an outstanding welcome at The Den.

PMLG Conference 2019
PMLG is pleased to announce that the venue has been chosen for Conference 2019 - The Canada Water Theatre & Library.
Designed by world renowned architect Piers Gough, partner at CZWG architects, the Canada Water Library opened in November 2011. The library incorporates a range of cultural and community facilities, reflecting Southwark Council’s ambition to put libraries at the heart of community life.
As part of an innovative partnership with Southwark Council, the 150-seat theatre is managed and programmed by the Albany, South East London’s leading performing arts venue. The Albany has a reputation for visionary programming that reflects the cultural diversity and creative mix of the area. PMLG Conference will be using the Theatre as its primary venue, along with other meeting rooms within the complex for workshop sessions. This year's conference will be a single-day event, followed by the PMLG Awards Dinner in the evening, and we expect to be able to offer a very affordable price for what will be an exiting and interesting day of topical and relevant presentations and workshops allied with unrivalled CPD and networking opportunities. More details about the agenda and speakers will be announced here as details are finalised. Meanwhile, mark the date in your diary:
Friday 4th October, 2019
We look forward to seeing you in Southwark!

CILIP Conference Bursary
The CILIP Conference (3-4 July, Manchester) is one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated events in the library and information sector and we can offer one full delegate place with one night’s accommodation as a bursary place.
CILIP Conference brings together around 500 professionals from across the sector to share experiences, knowledge and expertise. The keynote speakers include Liz Jolly, Patrick Lambe and Kriti Sharma. The programme is being finalised but you can see an outline of the session content at cilipconference.org.uk. Keep up to date by following @CILIPConf19, PMLG will have a stand in the exhibition hall, so remember to come and say hello, find out about our event schedule and see if you can get involved with our projects.
To submit your application for the bursary place, simply write 200 words or record not more than 2 minutes of video message. Content must cover, how attendance at the CILIP Conference would benefit your continuing professional development and how you intend to share the benefits of your attendance with your library service and the rest of the PMLG community (for example, through social media participation). The successful applicant(s) will be required to write follow-up reports for potential publication in the PMLG newsletter and Access: The Journal of the Public and Mobile Libraries Group.
Application deadline is midnight Friday 12 April.
Please email your completed application to firstname.lastname@example.org along with your PMLG CILIP Membership number and contact details.
We are particularly interested in hearing from people who have never been to the CILIP Conference before, and who wouldn’t ordinarily be able to go. Alternatively, early bird discounts are available until 17 May and you can book these directly on the www.cilipconference.org.uk website. Remember to log in to the CILIP website before booking so that it recognises your membership status and offers you the correct delegate rate.
The Committee of PMLG recently agreed that there is now little value in restricting new issues of ACCESS, the quarterly Journal of the Public & Mobile Libraries Group, to PMLG Members only, especially given that any CILIP member can join PMLG free of charge! Therefore, in order to be able to use ACCESS to promote both CILIP and PMLG Membership to a wider audience and allow even better advocacy for Public and Mobile Library best practice, ACCESS will now be an Open Publication, available to all to download.
Members will still receive a personalised reminder e-mail when each issue becomes available.
