World War One Reading Pack 2
Group HomeGroup HomeGroup PagesDirectory & Features Join Group

This pack supplements the pack the School Libraries Group originally brought out in 2014, to commemorate the start of World War One. We always planned to add to it as we were aware that the next 4 years would see many more books published.

Now that the 100 year anniversary of the armistice of November 1918 is here, we have looked at the books that have been written and published since 2014, as well as some we missed last time, and created this new pack to sit alongside the original pack. The books cover the primary and secondary age range, picture books and novels, short and long. We have also looked at the information books available for children and young people and added annotated lists, one for primary and one for secondary.

We hope this pack will be of use to school and public librarians, teachers, youth group leaders and anyone working with children and young people.

While the 4 year commemoration of the “Great War” is drawing to a close, the need to remember the catastrophic effects of war, and the ease with which we can slide into it, will remain a vital topic. We may see the effects of modern warfare on daily television news broadcasts, but for many of us it is still a distanced event. Imaginative literature has the power to bring its emotional impact into our own lives on an individual level.

During the war those serving at the Front often sent home silk embroidered postcards to their loved ones. Our cover design reflects some of these and are from a collection belonging to a member of the School Libraries Group national committee. Further information on postcards of this nature can be found here

The pack includes activities and discussion topics for the following texts:
