Evaristo and Cadwalladr among 2022 CILIP Honorary Fellowships

Honorary Fellowship has been awarded by CILIP and its predecessor the Library Association since 1896. It is the highest recognition given to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the library and information world. CILIP is delighted to announce our 2022 honorary fellowships - six very different individuals recognised for their contributions to the sector.

Bernardine Evaristo

Bernardine Evaristo is a British author and academic. Her novel Girl, Woman, Other, jointly won the Booker Prize in 2019 alongside Margaret Atwood's The Testaments, making her the first Black woman to win the Booker. Through her work, she has encouraged a new generation of readers to find themselves in literature and to go on to imagine a better, more inclusive and representative world.
Bernardine is awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in recognition of outstanding contribution to literacy, reading and representation in literature.


Carole Cadwalladr

Carole Cadwalladr is a British author, investigative journalist and features writer for The Observer. Cadwalladr rose to international prominence in 2018 for her role in exposing the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal for which she was a finalist for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. She is a Founder of All the Citizens – the crowdfunded citizen action group which has taken action against the conduct of Government business using encrypted messaging platforms.
Carole is awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in recognition of her outstanding contributions to journalism, evidence and the fight against misinformation.


Chris Morrison

Chris Morrison is Copyright and Licensing Specialist at the Bodleian Libraries. Together with Senior Lecturer Dr Jane Secker, he forms half of copyrightliteracy.org - the website which aims to make learning about copyright 'fun, engaging and empowering' for information professionals and learning specialists. Chris is co-author of the Facet book Copyright and E-Learning: a guide for practitioners, and originator of Copyright the Card Game.
Chris is awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in recognition of his outstanding contribution to copyright education and its impact on the library and information profession.


Dr Carolynn Rankin

Dr Carolynn Rankin worked as an information management specialist for 20 years before moving into professional LIS education in 2000. She was Course Leader for the CILIP accredited MSc Information Studies course at Leeds Metropolitan University (now Leeds Beckett University) before taking early retirement as a university lecturer in August 2012. For nine years she has served as a CILIP Accessor, conducting evaluations for university programme accreditation and short course accreditation. For over seven years she served as an external examiner on the CILIP Professional Registration Panel. She also served on the CILIP Professional Registration Working Group from 2019 to 2022.
Carolynn is awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in recognition of her outstanding contribution to advancing professionalism in library and information practice, to children’s librarianship and to the cause of international collaboration.


Caroline Roche

Caroline Roche is a leading figure in the school library community, known to many as ‘Heart of the School’ for her tireless advocacy of the importance of school librarians. Caroline has been a hugely effective Chair of the CILIP School Libraries Group since 2017 and has successfully co-Chaired the Great School Libraries campaign since 2020. In her nomination, her colleagues wrote: “She is a consummate professional and exemplary role model for school librarians everywhere, and fully deserves to be awarded an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of her services and contribution to our profession.” We agree.
Caroline is awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in recognition of her outstanding contribution to school librarianship and the wider library and information profession.


Dr Sian King

Dr Sian King has made a profound contribution to the library and information profession during a professional career spanning more than 50 years. Her career included roles in Health, HE and FE before becoming Head of Library at the Public Record Office at Kew and subsequently Technical Services Librarian, House of Lords. Her roles have included External Verifier for ILS NVQs; member of the LA Adult Libraries & Learning Committee; member of the London Learning Network Group; Beacon Award Assessor (Association of Colleges); registered mentor for CILIP Chartership candidates; regional assessor for CILIP certification & revalidation awards; CILIP Cymru Wales Committee; CILIP Retired Professionals Group and CILIP Professional Registration Support Officers Committee
Sian is awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in recognition of her outstanding contribution to advancing professionalism in library and information practice over the course of her career.

Recipients of the title join a roll call of important figures including Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for England, Professor Chris Whitty, three time former Prime Minster Rt. Hon Stanley Baldwin, Scottish philanthropist and library founder Andrew Carnegie, the inventor of the Dewey Decimal system used in library classification, Melvil Dewey; the poet, novelist and librarian Philip Larkin, novelist Dame Catherine Cookson and children’s illustrator and author Shirley Hughes.
