Setting the scene for debate around liberty and personal freedoms within the emerging information environment, Shami Chakrabarti, Cory Doctorow and R.David Lankes are to head up a diverse set of keynote speakers at the CILIP Conference, 2-3 July in Liverpool.
Chakrabarti will draw on her work in campaigns from privacy laws to anti-terror legislation to talk about the threats to our democratic institutions and why our rights are paramount in upholding democracy. Doctorow’s keynote ‘Information doesn’t want to be free…But people do’ will examine how can libraries and their supporters can strike alliances to ensure information policy is afforded due respect, whilst satisfying creators; and Lankes will present his action plan for world domination through librarianship.
They are joined by Guardian columnist and author and prison library advocate Erwin James, Will Moy of the independent fact checking organisation Full Fact, Stuart Hamilton, Deputy Secretary General at IFLA, and Barbara Shack from Libraries without Borders. A Presidential Address will be made by CILIP President and former government information specialist Jan Parry, who was part of the Secretariat to the Hillsborough Independent Panel.
Finalists for Best Association Conference in 2013, CILIP promises to deliver another outstanding conference experience, and an opportunity for people to connect, network and innovate. Delegates are invited to register now for early bird discounts on selected packages.
Designed to interest the library, information and knowledge community, conference activities will be based around four key themes: Information management, information literacy and digital inclusion, demonstrating value, and digital futures and technology. Taking place at the historic Grade 1 listed St. Georges Hall with a special reception at the Museum of Liverpool the conference will also showcase the culture and heritage of Liverpool city.
