Digital Transformations for UK public libraries: five approaches to a ‘Single Digital Presence’

CILIP welcomes the publication of Digital Transformation for UK Public Libraries: Five approaches to a ‘Single Digital Presence’. We were glad to contribute to the consultation on the report and look forward to working with the British Library, Arts Council England, Carnegie UK Trust and other stakeholders to explore the issues it raises and to develop a clear roadmap for future implementation.

There can be no doubt that library users are living increasingly digital lives and as a sector we need to do more to respond to their changing needs. We welcome the British Library’s analysis of the five potential responses to a ‘single digital presence’. We agree with the report’s conclusion that what is needed is a comprehensive and sector-wide programme of digital transformation and digital marketing rather than the development of a single platform.

It is important to recognise that this digital transformation can only be achieved if it is driven by dedicated, professional staff with both technical know-how and a deep understanding of the needs of their users. We believe that any investment in infrastructure and content should be matched by investment in innovation, staffing and skills to ensure that the transformation of the sector is sustainable and driven by user need.

CILIP particularly welcomes the publication of the report in light of the theme of Libraries Week 2019, which is ‘celebrating libraries in a digital world’. We know that public librarians across the UK are doing great work to engage and support their users through technology, We hope that librarians and information professionals in all sectors will get involved in Libraries Week 2019 between the 7th and 12th October and help get the message across that libraries are needed more than ever in our digital lives.
