is open to comments and questions from attendees on how to work towards better values-based leadership in the sector.
Presidential Debate: Divided we fall: Are public libraries a national network or a local service
Public libraries have a transformative impact on the daily lives of millions of people as ‘civic infrastructure’ in communities across the UK. As policy and funding become more fragmented, however, the idea of a ‘national public
library network’ is coming increasingly under pressure.
In this second in our series of Presidential Debates, CILIP President Paul Corney invites a panel of speakers including award-winning journalist and author Kate Thompson to explore the question “Are public libraries
a national network or a local service?”.
The debate will be of interest to library leaders and staff, library users and supporters and people involved in decision-making roles in Local and Central Government.
Presidential debate: Leading with values
Britain’s industry and economy are changing. As we enter a 4th Industrial Revolution, our needs, and expectations of the places where we live, work, learn and play are evolving rapidly. The Coronavirus pandemic has arguably
accelerated a ‘digital shift’ that has been underway for much of the last 40 years, helping us to imagine a world where ‘work’ is what you do, not where you are. In the future, rather than being fixed in one place with
a single purpose, people will move seamlessly between different contexts – home, work, college, community - at a time and place that suits them, enabled by always-on smart devices.
So, what do these changes mean for our towns, cities, and High Streets? How can librarians, knowledge and information professionals continue to adapt our services to address the new realities of daily life for our users, and
what can we do to ensure that nobody gets left behind?
This third in our series of Presidential Debates will explore these questions:
Is the genie out of the bottle? Have we come too far in the last 18 months to go back to the old model of working? What will work look like in 18 months’ time?
What will the place of work look like then; and
What, if anything, will the impact be on urban centres if the shift away from mass commuting continues?
Presidential Debate: From Heroes to superheroes: future skills for our profession
The pandemic has changed how we work and Library and Information Professionals have risen to the challenge showing their Superhero powers. But what next in the future of work? What skills should we be developing as new and
established professionals? What are the opportunities for professional development? Join Kate Robinson, Vice-President of CILIP and guests for this fourth presidential debate.
We have invited 3 expert panellists to share their views and to respond to questions from participants.
Ellen Tise: Senior Director, Library & Information Services, Stellenbosch University
Sue Williamson: Director for Libraries for Arts Council England
Simon Burton: Managing Director and Co-Founder of CB Resourcing, and CILIP Trustee
CILIP Vice-President Kate Robinson hosts the debate.
