Collections at Risk

This year the RBSCG conference will focus on the risks that our library and archive collections face and how to mitigate them. Topics that will be covered include theft and vandalism and the sale and disposal of collections. Conservation and preservation issues will also be covered. We will have talks on disaster planning and what to do when you have a very limited budget for preservation. The preservation of materials not in paper format will also be covered. This year our conference is at Venue Cymru in the beautiful seaside town of Llandudno.The conference is open to delegates from all levels and sectors of the Information profession and it is the perfect event to share experiences, foster new relationships and inspire new professionals. Bookings are open until the 4th of May.

Our themes are:

  • Health: partnerships, information, opportunities for working cross sectors
  • Privacy: responsibilities of the profession
  • Copyright: sharing of information, images, music, research

UX Libs in a day Thurs Feb 16th 2017 at Reed Hall, Exeter University

In association with ARLG-SW, Andy Priestner will be running a one day workshop on user experience research methods. He will be sharing the most effective UX techniques for researching how library spaces and services are used with lots of practical examples and opportunities for interaction; attendees will learn a range of techniques to help them discover how library users really behave and what they actually think about our services.

Encouraging children to enjoy and read books is a core principal of the Youth Libraries Group.  It is also essential to the future wellbeing of communities and economy. However, it is well documented that family dynamics has a great impact on children's ability to engage with reading. The aim of this conference is to provide practitioners with the skills to engage with parents, families and carers in supporting children's reading.

As librarians and information professionals we facilitate knowledge-sharing and knowledge-building every day. But libraries have never been (and probably never will be) neutral repositories of knowledge. Libraries and their staff exert tremendous control over how books and other resources are organised and how, when, and by whom they are discoverable. There are many ways in which we may unknowingly contribute to inequalities, biases, ethnocentrism and power imbalances.
