What to do with historic maps

Posted By Samuel Holden, 31 August 2022
Hi everyone, I've recently started working at my current library and I've been cataloguing our historic map collection. We have all sorts of historic maps for the local area including large original 19th century OS maps amongst many others. I'd love to showcase these somehow but our wall space is minimal. Has anyone ran any events with a map collection or displayed them and made them accessible in other ways? It seems a shame to have them hidden away in cabinets and only getting them out if someone request a specific map which happens rarely! Kind regards, Samuel

Those were the days: Keep Smiling: Picture Postcards of World War 11

Posted By Roger Penny, 07 October 2021
In the late 1980s and early 1990s I was lucky enough to be appointed to a new post with Kirklees Council which initially involved running the Postcard Museum and Library in Holmfirth, as well as Holmfirth Civic Hall. I was fortunate that Kirklees already had an excellent Local Studies Librarian Jane Helliwell who looked after the collection of Bamforth & Co postcards. The Council's Graphic Design Unit also supported me as a librarian to assemble and put on a series of exhibitions at the Postcard Museum which was at the time a popular visitor attraction, alongside Sid's Cafe and Nora Batty's house. Conscious of the fact that the people of Holmfirth were less inclined to visit the museum, we opened our Keep Smiling exhibition with a 1940s evening featuring a local theatre company and serving a 1940s style supper. Photos of the exhibition are featured in the photo gallery.

Designing e-learning packages on local history topics – advice needed

Posted By Anthony C. Pilmer, 17 November 2017
Just had this request for info from Julie Davis from Wiltshire….. I am currently working with Wiltshire Libraries to design e-learning packages on local history topics such as finding maps and online resources to help refresh and train library staff. Have you or anyone you know tried to develop e-learning for local history? If so what were the pitfalls and where the courses useful? Share your thoughts via Twitter @CILIP_LSG or contact Julie directly via @LibLocalStudies or Julie.Davis@wiltshire.gov.uk.
