How to hire a Registered Professional

In a highly-competitive jobs market, advertising for a registered professional can really help your organisation stand out. All you need to do is include CILIP’s approved wording into your person specification, job description and recruitment advertising.

“Candidates must demonstrate an appropriate level of professionalism, such as a CILIP-accredited academic qualification in Library and Information Science OR current professionally-registered status with CILIP”.

CILIP is proud to partner with leading recruitment specialists TFPL on a regular sector-wide Salary Survey. We strongly recommend that employers benchmark professional grading and salaries against the most recent survey. Some employers incentivise staff by offering a pay increment on successful completion of professional registration with CILIP.

CILIP is also pleased to provide Information Professional Jobs, the leading specialist job advertising and recruitment platform for library, information and knowledge management professionals. Employers can view similar roles, benchmark their proposed roles and advertise through this easy-to-use self-service platform, which reaches more than 12,000 prospective candidates.

CILIP also works with leading specialist recruiters to help find exactly the right candidate for you. Please visit the sites below for more information:

  • Eden Smith Ltd – leading specialist recruiter in data and data science
  • CB Resourcing – leading specialist recruiter in information and knowledge management

Maintaining professional skills in a restructure

We know that from time-to-time, employers in all sectors may need to adjust their staffing structure or capacity to address new challenges. We always recommend that employers seek to retain professional skills through any restructure process, and that new role descriptions (such as those for ‘pooled’ staff) should include the following wording:

“Candidates must demonstrate an appropriate level of professionalism, such as a CILIP-accredited academic qualification in Library and Information Science OR current professionally-registered status with CILIP”.

Losing professional skills and experience can create long-term problems for any organisation, so please do contact your local CILIP network to discuss how this can best be avoided.
