Professional Registration levels

Professional Registration FAQ

Professional Registration demonstrates your abilities, knowledge and experience. There are three levels to suit every stage of your career - Certification, Chartership and Fellowship.

How do I know which level of Professional Registration to go for?

Certification

Choose this if:

  • You are just starting out in your information career
  • You want to develop your core skills
  • You are looking to build your confidence in the work you do

Chartership

Choose this if:

  • You have a body of professional experience e.g. you have been working in the profession for a number of years
  • You have the opportunity to reflect on and recommend service improvements
  • You can be evaluative about your service

If you work specifically in the Knowledge management field and meet the above criteria choose KM Chartership

Fellowship

Choose this if:

  • You have made a significant contribution to the profession
  • You can evidence substantial achievement in professional practice

e.g. Are you considered an expert in your field? Have you published papers, presented at conferences? Are you involved in professional committee? Do you contribute to work across your sector, not just in your organization?

If you think you have already paid your enrolment fee from 2018 onwards, please email memberservices@cilip.org.uk to verify.

The enrolment fee is a one-time only payment and you do not need to pay the enrolment fee each year.

I already have Chartership/Fellowship but would like to change that to KM Chartership/KM Fellowship as I work predominantly in the KM field.

If you already hold Chartership or Fellowship then you can choose to do the KM Conversion pathway which will award the KM version. You will need to do this by demonstrating your professional expertise and ongoing CPD in KM via a submission that includes:

  • An annotated CV showing that you are an experienced KM practitioner
  • Your current job description, annotated to show that KM is a significant element of your role
  • A copy of your organisation's aims & objectives, or similar (if there isn't one you should create an equivalent document)
  • A CPD log of 20+ hours of CPD aligned to the specified areas of the PKSB for Knowledge Management
  • An evaluative statement of no more than 500 words addressing the three criteria for the award (MCLIP Chartered Knowledge Manager or FCLIP Knowledge Management Fellow)
  • 2-3 pieces of evidence supporting your evaluative statement
  • For FCLIP Knowledge Management Fellow candidates, a letter of support
