You may find that the job you really want is one you’re not yet qualified for, or maybe you have your eye on an ideal employer you’d like to work for. This is where career planning can help, here’s what you need to do:
Get hold of a copy of the job description for that dream role, (or have a look at the employer website and check out their current staff – whose job do you want?)
List the skills you need to do it.
Match those skills with ones you currently have (CILIP members – remember the PKSB can help you do this)
You’ll be left with a list of skills you don’t have yet, but need to develop or develop further – use these to focus your CPD efforts or, if you’re job hunting, look for a role that will allow you to develop these areas so you can move into the job you really want.
Take the first step in finding a new job, write your CV and figure out where you want to go.
