9:00-9:10 Welcome


9:10-9:40 Alison King "Health and Wellbeing for Librarians"

Alison’s talk will focus on wellbeing, looking at the peculiarities of working in libraries and how much we contribute to other people's wellbeing, whilst often neglecting our own. She will be also be talking about the different challenges to wellbeing, relating them specifically to the library environment, incorporating some activities and exploring some helpful hints to keep us happy in and out of the workplace.


9:40-10:10 Sioned Jacques "Reading Well"

Sioned will talk about Reading Well Books on Prescription for Children, and Reading Well for Mental Health and Wellbeing. The Reading Well scheme is supported by Welsh Government and is promoted in all 22 Welsh Library authorities. Reading Well for Children recommends books to help and support children with their thoughts and feelings during tough times. Sioned will discuss the type of books involved, how they are chosen and how children can access them. Reading Well for Mental Health and Wellbeing provides information and support for common mental health conditions, or dealing with difficult feelings or experiences. It is important that we all look after our mental health.

10:20-11:20 Author talk with 2020 Tir na n-Og winner Claire Fayers

A lifelong, avid reader and now an author, Claire will speak about her own experiences of reading and wellbeing. Plus, how libraries can get the most of their local authors to bring in new readers.

Alison King

Alison King

Alison King is the librarian at Kings Monkton School in Cardiff. She is the Welsh representative on the CKG judging panel for the 2020-2021 awards and sits on the national commitee for the School Libraries Group.

Alison is a regular reviewer for The School Librarian and has a particular fondness for verse novels.

Sioned Jacques

Sioned Jacques

Sioned is the Welsh and Children’s; curriculum and literacy support Librarian at Cardiff Hubs and Libraries. A long-time member of CILIP and particularly active with the Youth Libraries Group member network both in Wales and UK nationally, Sioned has worked in libraries for over twenty years, and has been with Cardiff Hubs and Libraries for the past 5 years.

Sioned has judged and chaired the CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Awards and the English and Welsh Tir na n-Og Awards, been on various book selection panels and thinks the best part of her job is listening to children talk about the books they’ve read. Sioned is representing SCL on behalf of her manager, current SCL Chair Nic Pitman.

Claire Fayers

Claire Fayers

Claire Fayers is a children's author of fantasy books, including The Accidental Pirates, Mirror Magic and the winner of the English language 2020 Tir na n-Og award winner Storm Hound

Claire Fayers grew up in South Wales, studied English and Comparative Literature at the University of Kent in Canterbury, and is now back in Wales where she spends a lot of her free time tramping around castles in the rain, looking for dragons. She has worked as a church caretaker, a shoe shop assistant, in accountancy, in health and safety, in IT, and in a library. Only one of these prepared her in any way for life as a full-time author.
