This was the first cross-sector project in the country and offered free training, created a resource bank and gave access to an online forum for library staff interested in improving their welcome to new arrivals and refugees. Find out how this small, low-budget project was structured to maximise individual strengths to grow the Peninsula of Sanctuary.
Session 2: See Differently: How to Make Your Library More Accessible to Blind and Partially Sighted People. - Join RNIB's Library Engagement Manager Lara Marshall as she talks about common sight loss misconceptions, how to look after your eye and health, and simple but effective ways to interact and offer the best customer care to blind and partially sighted library users.
Session 3: Welcome, Access and Outreach at Exeter Cathedral Library. - Housed in the west wing of the Bishop's Palace is a modern library and archive facility in which are preserved and made accessible the Dean and Chapter's many thousands of books and documents which span the 10th to 21st centuries. The library is small and rare book displays regularly take place outside the library within the Cathedral. Emma Laws, the Cathedral Librarian, will be exploring the themes of welcome, access and outreach at the library.
Session 4: Taking the library to GRT communities. - Reaching Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities can be challenging due to a variety of barriers on both sides, ranging from location and literacy levels to mistrust of authority. North Somerset Libraries have been working to engage this community and show that libraries are a space and resource for everyone, regardless of background. Sarah Gosset, Librarian - Families and Outreach for North Somerset Council, will give the presentation Pechua Kucha style with plenty of time for questions.
