Metadata and Discovery Group AGM and Panel Discussion Event at the University of Manchester
Wednesday 3rd September 2025 @ 2pm
MDG invites you to a panel discussion followed by MDG's Annual General Meeting.
Panel Discussion: Practical Applications of Cataloguing Ethics
This panel discussion will look at cataloguing ethics and its practical applications. James Clark (Southampton Solent University) will chair the panel and put your questions to the speakers:
- Professor Karen Snow (School of Information Studies, Dominican University and ALA representative on the Cataloging Ethics Steering
Committee) on the Cataloging Code of Ethics;
- Carissa Chew (Doctoral Researcher & Inclusive Metadata Consultant, University of Edinburgh) on the Chew Inclusive Terminology Glossary and new directions for inclusive description;
- Dr Karen F. Pierce (Cardiff
University) and Helen Griffiths (Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama) on the adoption of the Code across the WHELF consortium, with practical case studies;
- Colette Townend (Libraries and Archives, London Borough of Lambeth) on updating UK Thema
headings.
Metadata & Discovery Group AGM
The AGM will the provide an overview of MDG activities since September 2024 with reports from the Chair and Treasurer. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to ask questions.
Although there are no specific committee roles to fill this year, there is space for interested group members to join the committee as 'members without portfolio.' Several new members joined after attending the AGM last year and we would be delighted
to hear from others this year.
Joining the committee is a great way to get involved in the work of the group, pick up new skills and share your experience with others. We aim to be representative of all sectors and levels of expertise and actively encourage MDG members to express an
interest in joining the committee.
Check our list of current committee members for a better idea of the activities carried out by the committee and the roles assigned. Please contact us at
chair.mdg@cilip.org.uk or secretary.mdg@cilip.org.uk if you would like to join the committee or have any questions, comments or suggestions.
The event is free to all members and non-members.
All are welcome to attend; the event will be hybrid to allow in-person or online attendance:
For directions to the in-person venue, please see the University of Manchester's Campus Map.
There will be an opportunity to network with MDG committee and other attendees following the AGM at a social event in a nearby bar (BrewDog Manchester Outpost); further details will be shared with registered attendees ahead of the event.
