Library development in Iraq - re-writing history

Wednesday 23 November 2022 17:00-18:00

Since visiting Baghdad in 1981, Ian Johnson has been investigating the gap between what we thought we knew about the development of libraries and librarianship in Iraq and the realities. This presentation is based on continual contact with Iraqi colleagues since that visit and an in-depth exploration of published information. It will correct errors in some popular histories of early libraries in Iraq; outline developments that have taken place during the twentieth century, including some that have previously received little attention; and highlight factors that have contributed to development or held it back.
