Join CILIP Library & Information History Group members for a special talk and viewing of the British Library's 'Writing: Making your Mark' exhibition. Given the inter-relationship between writing and reading, this exhibition is perfect for those interested in history of reading, books and libraries. This event begins with a twenty-minute introduction by a member of the British Library staff. The talk will highlight manuscripts to look out for in the exhibition, such as the oldest manuscripts or the oldest copies of certain texts, and note the first time certain manuscripts have been displayed in London or even in the UK.

Following this, members will enter the exhibition where they will discover the extraordinary story behind one of humankind’s greatest achievements from hieroglyphs to emojis, charting the evolution of writing through 5,000 years of human innovation. Marvel at items as diverse as James Joyce’s notes for his novel Ulysses and a 60,000-strong petition against Bengali partition, alongside Mozart’s musical flourishes and new takes on typography from the likes of Russian artist El Lissitzky and world-renowned design studio, Dalton Maag.
