Title:  The Reuse of Library Catalogues in 18th century Germany: the case of Julius Carl Schlaeger

Speaker:  Philippe Schmid (St Andrews / Edinburgh University)

This paper studies the reuse of library catalogues in eighteenth-century Germany. Focusing on the catalogues of the librarian and numismatist Julius Carl Schlaeger (1706-1786), who came to Gotha as the curator of antiquities in 1744 and took up the position of ducal librarian in 1746, I trace the development of Schlaeger's cataloguing practices over time.

Philippe Schmid completed his PhD in Modern History at the University of St Andrews in 2022. His research focuses on learned book culture, the history of the humanities and the roles played by students and knowledge brokers more generally at early modern universities. He will take up a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Edinburgh in 2023.
