Burnt books: a walk through the flames of London’s history

Saturday 8 September 2018, 11.00am-12.30pm

Twenty-first century London contains some of the finest libraries in the world, but what about the books that haven’t survived? In the company of Alice Ford-Smith (Bernard Quaritch Ltd), you are invited to walk through the City’s streets and alleyways to hear tales of war, censorship and the occasional accident. The stories are rarely happy but they demonstrate just how dramatic and lively the history of books, and London, can be.

The walk is jointly organised by CILIP London and CILIP Library & Information History Group. The walk for CILIP London and CILIP Library & Information History Group members is free, otherwise it's £5 + booking fee. Numbers are limited to 25 people and booking is essential.

Meeting point

The Maughan Library Chancery Lane London WC2A 1LR (Tube: Chancery Lane ; Holborn ; Temple)

The walk will commence from the main gate of The Maughan Library at 11am and finish approximately 90 minutes later near Bank, St Paul’s and Mansion House underground stations. Please be ready for no breaks, and the uncertainties of English weather.
