Lessons learned from next generation data

Lessons learned from next generation data: knowledge graphs and machine learning
Building massive knowledge graphs and applying machine learning models to our metadata infrastructures means we can generate a step-change in our levels of understanding about library collections and revolutionise the processes we use to steward billions
of records, in OCLC’s case, with WorldCat. For example, machine learning means we can identify duplicate bibliographic records without human intervention with more than 95% accuracy and at far greater speeds. The potential is only just beginning to
be unlocked, and, as we transition away from MARC towards coded, shareable, linkable components that are more completely understood by machines, there will be even greater opportunities for libraries to transform the quality, equity, and accuracy
of metadata in increasing volumes. During this session Ryan Shondell, OCLC’s Executive Director of Data Services will share what we’ve learned from OCLC’s work in this area and, from managing its new ultra-scale linked data infrastructure.
