UKeiG CPD Zoom Course: Discovering Google’s databases – meet the hidden family

Thursday, 31st March 2022 - 1 pm to 4 pm

Google continually changes the way it searches and presents results, often deploying AI to varying degrees, depending on the type of search query. The retrieved outputs are not always relevant to those of us conducting research of any kind - in-depth business, scientific or medical, for example - even when using advanced search commands. To confuse matters further, the default Google search does not retrieve all of Google’s content, and a critical mass of information is stored in separate Google databases that must be searched individually. Google Scholar, Books, Dataset Search, Trends, and Arts and Culture are just some examples.

This online course looks at Google’s collection of databases, their features, and when and how to use them effectively.

Who should attend?

Librarians, IT and information professionals from any discipline or sector, and other professional services staff looking for relevant and authoritative information. The course will up-skill experienced digital/information literacy support staff, but also benefit junior colleagues who are keen to develop their information retrieval experience.

.

Course outline and learning outcomes

  • A brief overview of how Google manages and presents results in its default search
  • Google’s collection of databases and what they each cover
  • The different interfaces and commands needed to access the databases.

It will be assumed that participants are already aware of the advanced commands available for Google’s default search. A set of slides outlining these plus links to fact sheets will be provided beforehand as a reminder.

By the end of the workshop participants will have:

An understanding of some of the technologies used by Google

  • An awareness of the range of and type of information stored within Google’s family of databases and resources
  • A knowledge of the different search interfaces and commands used with the databases
  • The skills to adapt search techniques depending on the type of information needed..
