UKeiG CPD Course: Better social media for libraries and cultural organisations - next steps in a post-Twitter world

Thursday 6th June 2024 - 10:00 am to 1:00 pm

Social media is so important to marketing, communications and dialogue online, but the landscape is more fractured than ever before. How do you elevate your library or information service to a higher level of stakeholder engagement. Which platforms provide the best opportunities, and where should we be setting up profiles in a post-Twitter world? This course is vital to transition your use of social media platforms to a more strategic level.

Who should attend?

All digital librarians, IT and information professionals from any discipline or sector who use or are keen to use Twitter (and its alternatives), Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms on behalf of their institution to maximise the value and impact of their library and information service.

Colleagues who work in the cultural sector - museums, galleries and archives, for example - have also found this course particularly helpful and are encouraged to book..

Course outline and learning outcomes

  • This online course is an essential professional development opportunity if you want to explore beyond the basics of what these tools have to offer, when to use them; and what techniques are required to use them effectively.

    Learning outcomes
For a decade Twitter has been perhaps THE key social media platform for many libraries, but it is no longer working for most and may soon become unusable. This course is ideal for those planning their next steps as an organisation - it is led by a social media consultant and trainer with an intimate understanding of how social media should be used in the workplace and addresses:

  • Key social media platforms, how they work and how to use them effectively
  • Potential alternatives to Twitter
  • Instagram, perhaps the most important platform moving forward - why it is useful, how it works and what type of content is successful
  • Building social media networks, increasing your following and increasing engagement
  • Managing multiple social media platforms.

Topics covered include:

Delegates will explore a range of social media networks, focusing on:
  • Building your following and increasing engagement with target audiences and stakeholders
  • When and what to post
  • Understanding and learning from statistics and analytics: measuring and analysing impact
  • Multimedia and images
  • Accessibility
  • Tone and language.

Many illustrations of good practice will be shared throughout, and delegates will have the chance to share their own examples if they wish.
