Working Internationally for Libraries: Welcoming the world into your library

'Working Internationally for Libraries’ is CILIP’s initiative to promote collaboration and partnership between libraries in England and their international counterparts.

In this webinar, diversity and inclusion advocate Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp talks to Jake Hope, Chair of CILIP’s Youth Libraries group about her passion for reading beyond our borders and for children's books in translation. Ruth will explore the importance of creating a welcoming multilingual landscape in our libraries, with a short presentation covering:

  • Libraries and me: how becoming a parent helped me see libraries as a powerful venue for anti-racism and inclusion
  • Never too young to explore the world: diversity and inclusion in Storytime and Bounce and Rhyme, and why we founded Babel Babies
  • Bilingual books and multilingual bookshelves: the impact of making space for languages other than English
  • Inclusivity in library collections: valuing linguistic diversity and overturning perceived language hierarchies
  • What is World Kid Lit Month and how can project World Kid Lit help librarians source children's and teen books first published in languages other than English?
