Creating a taxonomy from scratch
Taxonomies help connect and guide users to desired content, whether through searching or browsing. As the volume and importance of content has grown, so has the role for taxonomies. More kinds of systems that support information and knowledge management now support taxonomies: web content management systems, enterprise content management systems, digital asset management systems, records management systems, collaboration systems, etc. Taxonomies need to be customized for the specific content set they are to index and their users.
This free webinar will cover the basics of how to create a new taxonomy from scratch, regardless of the system implementation. Topics to be covered include: initial considerations in building a new taxonomy, choosing the the taxonomy type, determining the the taxonomy scope, uncovering sources for terms, creating terms and their relationships according to best practices, compiling and organizing the terms. There will also be time for questions.
Biography
Heather Hedden is a senior vocabulary editor at Gale/Cengage, where she edits the subject thesaurus for Gale research database products and develops discipline taxonomies for Cengage educational products. She also has been providing taxonomy consulting services through her own business, Hedden Information Management, for 12 years, designing taxonomies for both web and internal content management. Previously, she was the taxonomist at an enterprise search engine software company and in the document management department of a wind energy company. Heather independently teaches an online course in taxonomy creation, teaches conference workshops, including at Taxonomy Boot Camp London, and is the author of The Accidental Taxonomist, 2nd ed. (Information Today Inc., 2016)
