Diversity in the workforce and creating an inclusive workplace
How can you limit the impact of unconscious bias in your recruitment process? Can you ensure that your workplace is respectful and welcoming for all staff? Join us at the Employer Forum in Leeds and take part in two interactive, informal workshops that focus on diversity and inclusion in the workplace. These will be followed by an Open Forum to share best practice across sectors, on a number of topics.
The workshops, led by Josh Willacy of the Challenge Consultancy, will provide guidance on how you can promote your organisation to diverse candidates and provide techniques to ensure you limit the impact of unconscious bias within your recruitment process. Josh will also explore the legislation of equality, diversity and inclusion key terms and concepts, as well as best practice to ensure that your workplace is welcoming, respectful and engaging for all staff.
The Open Forum in the afternoon is your chance to share knowledge with your peers around common challenges and opportunities.

Central Library’s knowledgeable guides will show you around the beautiful Grade II listed building including its special collections: The Gott bequest of 600 early English gardening books and periodicals including works published in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries; the Gascoigne collection of militaria; the Leeds Pottery Drawing Books and Pattern Books and Boyne’s ‘History of Leeds’.

This session will provide guidance on how employers can promote themselves as an employer of choice to diverse candidates. It will also provide techniques to ensure organisations limit the impact of unconscious bias and unjust discrimination within their recruitment process.

Speakers and facilitators
Josh Willacy, EDI Trainer and Client Manager, Challenge Consultancy
Josh is a trainer and consultant and has provided equality, diversity and inclusion advice and training to organisations across the private, public and third sector for a number of years.
Josh has developed and delivered training courses to staff at all levels in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Inclusive Leadership, Dignity at Work and Unconscious Bias. As a trainer and consultant, he has worked with a large number of organisations including universities, the police, private companies, third sector and public-sector institutions.
Founded in 1985 by Femi Otitoju, Challenge has grown from a one-person organisation into an association of trainers and consultants from a variety of backgrounds, offering a wide range of skills and expertise, all working with common aims and objectives.
Nick Poole, CEO, CILIP
As CEO of CILIP, I am responsible for supporting our fantastic team to deliver for our members and for championing our profession. I studied Modern Languages and Linguistics and have a postgraduate qualification in the History & Philosophy of Science. Over the past 20 years, I’ve held various leadership roles in libraries, museums and the wider culture sector. I live in South West London with my family and dog.
Jo Cornish, Head of Sector Development, CILIP
I lead the CILIP Sector Development Team, committed to understanding the current and future needs of the profession and developing services accordingly. A Fellow of CILIP, with over 20 years’ experience as a practitioner, I specialises in building strategic partnerships. I am a passionate advocate for the importance of library, knowledge and information roles and the value they bring to society. Away from the office I am known to visit bridges and obsess over baseball.
Shirley Yearwood-Jackman, CILIP Trustee and Chair of the BAME Network Steering Group
Shirley has had an extensive career, working primarily in Special Libraries and Higher Education. Currently, she is a Liaison Librarian at the University of Liverpool. She has also had an international career in the Caribbean, serving as Director, Regional Resource Centre, U.S. Embassy. During her career she has been actively involved in Library Associations serving as President of the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries (ACURIL); Chair of the Local Organizing Committee for the ACURIL Conference, and a Regional Councillor of the Commonwealth Library Association (COMLA). Most recently, Shirley has been engaged in advancing equality policy at Liverpool as a member of the BAME network, the Equality Forum and the University’s Athena Swan Professional Services Self-Assessment team.
