Introduction to FAST subject headings
Janet Ashton and Caroline Kent will describe the British Library’s experience with FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology), including a description of what FAST is and its possible future developments, as well as its uses on the BL's own collections.

Biography
Janet Ashton is the manager of the West European Languages cataloguing team in the British Library, and has primary responsibility for LCSH training as well, including for delivery of external training courses in this standard. She has led the operational aspects of the FAST project in the Library, developing training for several different workstreams, and has always been keenly interested in subject access to collections.
Caroline Kent manages Metadata Creation Programmes at the British Library, responsible for English and Western European cataloguing of print and digital monographs, serials and maps. Caroline has a background in bibliographic and authority cataloguing, focusing on training & development, and with a special interest in the importance of subject analysis and classification to effective retrieval and collection management.
They are the authors of the article, “New approaches to subject indexing at the British Library,” which explains the FAST project and others, and was published in Cataloguing and Classification Quarterly in August 2017
