Beat the January Blues: “Time to…” write poetry with the RCN Libraries
The challenges of COVID-19, combined with staff shortages and difficult working conditions for nursing staff throughout the UK, have highlighted the need for many nurses and other healthcare workers to take time for themselves whenever they can. The RCN
Libraries team have encouraged and supported members of the Royal College of Nursing to do so by setting up a series of online events involving activities around the themes of self-care and wellbeing.
Frances, Stella and Phil from the RCN Library and Archive team will firstly introduce the “Time to…” programme, including a chance to ask questions about the sessions. They’ll also talk about what it is like to run the sessions from the perspective of
library staff.
There will then be an opportunity to take part in a taster “Time to…” poetry session. Nurse poet Romalyn Ante will guide you through a series of tasks to get you writing, generating ideas and give life to them. This workshop will mainly focus on themes
of self-love and appreciation, but you are free to interpret the tasks any way you see fit.
You do not need any writing experience to take part in this workshop – all you need is paper and a pen or pencil to write with.
Romalyn Ante is a specialist nurse practitioner, psychotherapist and award winning poet. She moved to the UK from the Philippines when she was 16 and has since won the Manchester Poetry Prize (2017) and the Poetry London Prize (2018). Her debut pamphlet, Rice & Rain (V. Press) received the 2018 Saboteur Award for Best Poetry Pamphlet. Her collection Antiemetic for Homesickness was released in July 2020 and includes 35 poems which vividly describe (amongst other subjects) her Filipino heritage and her work as a nurse
