Presidential debate: Leading with Values
Ethics and values are at the heart of the newly revamped PKSB. This session will explore issues surrounding the development of values led leadership in contemporary information and knowledge-based organisations. Barriers and challenges to the creation
of safe organisational cultures will be explored, including how to ensure negative and hostile behaviours such as bullying are eradicated and unrewarded systemically.
The debate format is a 15minute presentation by guest presenter Dr
Leo Appleton, followed by a discussion and sharing of experiences between the Chair, Professor Judy Broady-Preston and Dr Appleton. The second half of the session is open to comments and questions from attendees on how to work towards better values-based
leadership in the sector.

Biography
Leo Appleton is a senior university teacher at the
University of Sheffield's Information School. Prior to taking up his academic position he held senior leadership and management posts in several academic libraries, most recently as Director of Library Services at Goldsmiths, University of London.
He is also the editor-in-chief of New Review of Academic Librarianship, a peer review journal with which he has been involved for many years, and was formerly the editor of Cilip's Multimedia, Information and Technology journal and UKSG's e-News.
He has recently co-edited a book published by Facet, entitled Bold Minds: Library Leadership in a Time of Disruption, which focuses on contemporary library leadership trends and values.
Professor Judy Broady-Preston is Immediate Past President CILIP UK, Professor Emerita, Aberystwyth University, and Visiting Professorial Fellow UCL Qatar. Until October 2018 she was Executive Dean and Director, Institute of Professional Development (IPD), Aberystwyth
University and a member of the University Executive.
Her research interests include (1) impact, value and performance measurement; (2) leadership strategies, organisational learning and culture; integrated flexible learning and professional
development. She is the author of 100+ research papers, Editor-in-Chief of the Emerald journal, Global Knowledge, Memory and Communication, European editor JoEMLS, and editorial board member of seven international journals and numerous international
conferences.
She is the recipient of 7 major research prizes and numerous research grants, in addition to a 2010 Higher Education Academy National Teaching Award for an “Outstanding Contribution to Information and Computer Science”. Current external professional activities include UK Role Model and Mentor, Aurora Women in Leadership Programme, Advance HE.
