AGM & Talk: Inspiring Futures: Apprenticeships, Public Libraries and New Opportunities

Join us online for our AGM followed by a talk "Inspiring Futures: Apprenticeships, Public Libraries and New Opportunities".

This talk will focus on the contribution that the Library and Information Assistant Apprenticeship can make to workforce development. Mark Freeman will outline why Stockton Library Service decided to take advantage of the opportunities provided by this apprenticeship and the benefits that it is bringing. Marie Brett will describe the content of the apprenticeship, End Point Assessment and how Stockton learning and Skills Service are delivering the off the job training element. Elisha Oakley and Eve Howsden will describe their experience as apprentices”

Speakers

Mark Freeman

Mark Freeman has worked in public libraries for over 45 years now, starting as a Saturday Library Assistant in Northamptonshire in 1976.

His career spans periods in four different English library authorities and has included a full range of experience in the public library sector including specialisms in children and young people’s work, services for people who live with sight loss and general library management.

From 1983-2002 he worked in a variety of roles in North Yorkshire County Library and since 2002 he has been a chief librarian firstly in South Tyneside and currently in Stockton-on-Tees.  He has been actively involved with CILIP and the Society of Chief Librarians and was the first President of Libraries Connected from 2018-2020.  He was a corresponding Member of the Public Libraries Section of IFLA from 2018 - 2021.

Mark was awarded the MBE in the New Year’s Honours List 2021.

Marie Brett

Marie Brett is an assessor with Stockton Borough Council’s  Learning and Skills Service and has been instrumental in developing their off the job training programme for the Library Information and Archive Services Assistant Apprenticeship.  
 
She has worked in the information advice and guidance sector for 35 years, most recently  as strategic lead for public library services in Sunderland. From 2003 – 2011 she managed the  Information, Advice and Guidance networks in Tyne and Wear and Northumberland. From  2000-2003 she was part of the Guidance Council team that developed the matrix standard for information, advice and guidance services; working with library services across the north of England to implement it within their settings.
 
She was an active member of the Society of Chef Librarians, chairing the north-east branch from 2014 - 2016
 
She has extensive experience delivering training and is a qualified assessor and internal verifier.
