Public Libraries: past, present and futureTuesday 29 March 2022; 10.00 - 13.00This year CILIP is presenting a series of half-day training events for public libraries staff, primarily at GLL libraries. This This half-day online session, presented by Diana Edmonds of GLL, introduces delegates to public libraries and explores important issues from their past, present and future. It is all about public libraries – the history of their development and establishment – and the more recent closures which we have seen across the country. Delegates will consider the purpose of public libraries, whether book lending is still relevant, and the breadth of their role in providing valuable services to local communities. Discussion sessions will suggest opportunities for public libraries in the future.
This course is designed for all staff working in public libraries and is particularly suited to newcomers and those who need a refresher. It is also available for CILIP members and non-members who work in public libraries to attend for a fee. It is likely that most delegates will be staff from public libraries run by GLL. Learning Objectives:
- Increase your understanding of the history of public libraries
- Identify key issues with public libraries now
- Have the opportunity to consider future opportunities for public libraries
