Before we say what this session is, let us tell you what it is not. It is not a voyeuristic look at the worst of what some women experience as they go about their work. It is not an intrusive discussion about what she – or you – ‘could have done differently’. Because as women it is #NotOurJob to endure sexual harassment in library workplaces; nor is it our job to ‘deal’ with it through self-defence strategies, conflict management training or solutions of tacit acceptance that were known to be proposed in the past. In this special #WINspiration on Friday 25th November, the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we will engage with the latest research that evidences the reality of sexual harassment in libraries, with even one incident being one too many. We’ll learn about your legal rights and the responsibilities of employers. And we’ll invite allies across the sector and beyond to pledge their support for the #NotOurJob ABCs: Acknowledge the problem can and does exist around the world Believe women when they disclose harassment Challenge harassment when you see, hear or read it, whether inside the library or not. We understand that this is a difficult topic and want to ensure that all attendees feel supported throughout. No one will be asked to disclose their personal experiences during the session, nor if any form of harassment has happened to them directly or indirectly. You’ll be free to join, leave and rejoin the virtual call at any point, and there will also be a ‘time out’ breakout room available throughout, if and when you need it. This event is free, online and open to all - please register here. Dedicated support is available for anyone in our profession or beyond who has experienced sexual harassment. Organisations include: The Scottish Women’s Rights Centre (for all women, including trans women) Rape Crisis Scotland (for everyone) Victim Support Scotland (for everyone) Safeline (for everyone) The CILIP Legal Advice Line is also available with free confidential and practical legal advice for all CILIP members in advance of, during and after the session.
