Kew Gardens

This virtual tour highlighted some treasures from the special collections including:

  • medieval herbals
  • some of the earliest works to describe and classify plants
  • the Kew collection relating to Carl Linnaeus’ crucial taxonomic work
  • archival digitisation projects
  • collaboration with volunteers and new technologies to make the history of plants more accessible
  • the many remarkable illustrations that combine scientific precision and profound beauty.

Kew has one of the largest collections of published botanical information in the world. The main subject area is the taxonomy and systematics of plants, and other subjects relevant to the work done at Kew are also covered – horticulture, mycology, medicinal botany, and many more. The archive focuses on the history of Kew and its plant collectors, and there is an outstanding collection of botanical art.

This virtual visit has been organised by CILIP RPG (Retired Professionals) in association with u3a (University of the Third Age).
