Online Training Event: Enquiry skills and an intro to Dewey for public library staff

Public library staff help customers to find what they are looking for. This session looks at enquiry desk skills and also provides an introduction to Dewey: how resources are classified in public libraries and what those series of numbers mean. Designed for GLL public libraries, we welcome delegates from other public library authorities across the UK.

A CILIP Training Session for Staff Working in Public Libraries

Online, Half-Day Course

6 June 2023 10am-1pm

Public library staff provide assistance to customers in finding what they are looking for. This key skills session provides information on enquiry skills to help staff find the best outcome for their customers. It also looks at how resources are classified in public libraries and what those series of numbers mean. 

Course level:

This course is particularly suitable for staff new to public libraries and those with less experience of enquiry work and Dewey. It is also suitable for those wanting to refresh their knowledge of those areas.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the importance of enquiry skills to assist library customers 
  • Learn and practice the techniques to use when answering customer enquiries  
  • Understand what the Dewey Decimal Classification system is and why public libraries use it 
  • Learn some of the Dewey number structure and practice it 
  • Learn what a Marc library record is
  • Discuss and share with colleagues in small groups
