A half-day online training event for public library staff. As public libraries adapt to delivering services post-pandemic, they need to find ways to engage with their communities in order to communicate their benefits, increase use and demonstrate value. This session provides an overview on what effective engagement looks like. Designed for GLL public libraries, we welcome delegates from other public library authorities across the UK.

A CILIP Training Session for Staff Working in Public Libraries

Online, Half-Day Course

As public libraries adapt to customers’ financial difficulties, technological change and delivering services post-pandemic, now more than ever, they need to find ways to engage with their communities in order to communicate their benefits, increase use and demonstrate value. This session provides an overview on what effective engagement looks like and considers tools and techniques for effective promotional activities. 

Course level:

This course is suitable for staff at all levels. This session is particularly suitable for new or less experienced staff with responsibility for engagement and promotion and those needing a refresh on their engagement, promotion and marketing skills. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the importance, context and methods of engaging in communities
  • Gain practical tips in best methods of engagement and promotion 
  • Discuss and share ideas and best practices with colleagues in small groups 

Trainer: Terry Kendrick

Terry Kendrick has over 30 years' experience of delivering information and marketing training courses.

Originally qualified as a librarian, Terry has run his own information and marketing training and consultancy company – Information Now Ltd – which was established in 1989. He specialises in strategic marketing planning facilitation and training, strategic risk management, management consultancy skills, internet search techniques and competitive intelligence.

In addition to information activities Terry has in the past been Director of the MBA Programme at the University of East Anglia and Director of Executive Education at Leeds University Business School. In his freelance information and marketing activities Terry has worked on projects in over 20 countries.

Terry is a CILIP trainer, presenting a number of tailored programmes for organisations. He has also written articles on marketing planning and is the author of 'Developing Strategic Marketing Plans That Really Work: A toolkit for public libraries' (2006) and Engaging your Community through Active Strategic Marketing: A Practical Guide for Librarians & Information Professionals (2021).
