1 p.m. AGM
1.30 to 2.30 p.m. Could Artificial Intelligence help us communicate research better? - presented by Andy Tattersall.
Andy is an Information Specialist at The School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) at The University of Sheffield. He writes, teaches and delivers talks and training about research communications (including podcasting, blogging, social media, video/animation, infographics), digital academia, open research, web and information science and altmetrics: in particular, their application for research, teaching, learning, knowledge exchange and collaboration. Andy hosts two online courses for UKeiG on communicating research using a mixture of digital tools.
‘There’s much we do not yet know about the impact of AI within academia, it offers both opportunities and threats. One potential benefit could be in the area of research dissemination, but that is not without potential hazards. Academics and aligned specialists, including library and information professionals all have a vested interest in the communication of new knowledge. The barrier to this often comes down to the triple threat of time, money and expertise - AI might be able to help with that.’
In his presentation Andy will explore some of the opportunities to employ AI to help disseminate research using digital technologies and AI but also investigate what threats lie under the surface.
2:30 to 3:15 p.m. The impact of Open Access monographs and long form publications for researchers and the lay public – presented by David Ball.
In UKeiG’s inaugural column in the March 2023 issue of CILIP’s Information Professional magazine, UKeiG Chair David Ball writes about open access monographs, and he shares his insights during the afternoon.
He will also launch a call for international nominations for UKeiG’s prestigious 2023 Tony Kent Strix and Jason Farradane Awards, with a special announcement about a third award.
3.15 to 4 p.m. Supporting not-for-profit journal publishing through library services and support - presented by Sonya Betz
Sonya, Head of Open Publishing and Digitisation Services, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada writes:
‘The University of Alberta Library partners with independent scholarly societies and editorial
boards to publish more than seventy diamond open access journals. My presentation will explore our approach to supporting this vibrant and diverse collection of publications and provide some insight into how
these kinds of community-based, scholar-led, and almost exclusively open access publishing programs function within Canada's national scholarly publishing landscape.’
